A MIGHTY WYNN – Aaron Neathery, in follow up to my review of Follow the Leader, has this to say about Ed Wynn's next flick, The Chief:
It's absolutely horrible, a textbook example of MGM's inability to handle broad comedy. Loaded with hollow appeals to sympathy, it turns Wynn's wonderfully silly loony into a sad, ineffectual whipping boy for the world's "normal" denizens...painful to watch. In a nutshell, it's a preview of what MGM would do to the Marx Bros. a few years later, and Laurel and Hardy a few years after that. Critical response to The Chief sank Wynn's film career for a couple of decades, which is a real shame.Aaron has additional insights on This Man, This Wynn, over at his blog.
