"NIGHTSWIMMING . . .DESERVES A QUIET NIGHT" – Well, now Chris Martin and lads have gone on to ruin Austin City Limits, if you believe the "Roots Rock Weirdoes" crowd. Me, I pretty much enjoyed ubiquitous Coldplay's hour-long PBS performance last night – flubbed version of "Ring of Fire" and all – and found Martin to be rather charming in his limited 'tween-song patter, though, as is so often the case with this plastic person, I prefer the music in its studio incarnation. First episode of ACL that I've watched since – oh, I don't know, mebbe Joe "King" Carrasco or Lyle Lovett – so, if nuthin' else the band's appearance got me watching the show again. Bringing Michael Stipe on to sing two songs with the group didn't necessarily show lead singer Martin off in the best light, but you've gotta admire their unabashed fannishness . . .
