S'LONG LEO – Damn winter and damn winter deaths, too. Reading about the passing of John Spencer, an actor I first noted and liked on L.A. Law – but grew to love on the basis of his performances on The West Wing – I find myself feeling the loss of both the actor and the character that he so beautifully created in the last few years. Spencer's Leo McGarry is in many ways one of the more difficult characters in the Aaron Sorkin universe: a hard-nosed and experienced political pragmatist who can energetically argue about the expedient path even as you know he loathes the route he advising his boss the president to take. It's a tricky role to negotiate without making the character come across cartoonish, wishy-washy or opportunist, but Spencer managed it with nary a false note. His absence will definitely be felt on The West Wing, but beyond that, I'm just gonna miss seeing him on the small screen . . .
