"I WANT TO SEE THE SUN AGAIN" – Speakin' of sophomore outings (as we were yesterday), I also recently picked up the second volume of Mochizuki's Dragon Head, and, if anything, the horror survival series has gotten even more effectively disturbing. As hero Teru attempts to find a way out of the collapsed mountain tunnel through a rickety air duct, the progressively more deranged Nubuo paints himself with lipstick like a lizardian Joker – also taking time to ogle, then decorate, our sleeping heroine Ako. For this sequence alone, the book deserves its OT (Age 16+) rating. While not as explicit as some of the panels that drew fire in a recent public library controversy, it does conclude with a panel of a top-free Ako, though the net effect of the sequence is more creepy than erotic.
Per Tokyopop's site, it looks like our threesome will be escaping their tunnel trap by volume four, only to learn that things really aren't that much better topside. (Clearly, that big flash of light they saw before entering the tunnel was a Significant Event.) I'm curious as to whether writer/artist Mochizuki will be able to maintain the same level of clammy suspense – and the taut interplay between our trio of teen survivors – that he's got going now, though I have my doubts. Be nice to be surprised, though . . .
