DEATH AND THE SEASON FINALE – James Wolcott is justly peeved about the current tendency to push teleseries' finales with a Big Death or at least the promise of same. I agree that this card has definitely been overplayed this year – epsecially in non-essential outings like this year's C.S.I. two-parter, which unsucessfully attempted to one-up Quentin Tarantino by critically shooting Jim Brass in the penultimate episode. ("You shot Jimmy!" "You bastards!") But I will admit to being mildly surprised by the big demise on The O.C. When Fox started running those commercials indicating that one of the cast would snuff it in the season finish, I immediately assumed that it'd be one of the grown-ups (Peter Gallagher, say, whose character has not particularly been endearing himself to some of the local corrupt element) since why would the writers wanna do in any of its Beautiful Young Cast? Shows what I know . . .
