"MEAT'S GONNA BE THE DEATH OF OLE PETE YET!" – Did a road trip for work yesterday and for the ride home, I played more of the jump blues that inspired my recent Wynonie Harris posting. Listening to New Orleans tenor belter Roy Brown (who wrote and first recorded "Good Rocking Tonight"), I once again was confronted by his utterly twisted sex and cannibalism track, "Butcher Pete." First heard Part One of this perverse number (it was originally released as the A- and B-side to a DeLuxe single back in 1950) on Rhino's Risque Rhythm collection, though not too long after Buster Poindexter recorded both parts for his Buster's Happy Hour release, changing the word "record" to "CD" in the process. I've since learned that the Cramps have also recorded this jumpin' ditty, but I haven't heard their version. In any event, both parts of the original can be found on Good Rocking Tonight: The Best of Roy Brown. And now, for your edification, here are the lyrics to Part One:
Butcher Pete (Part One) (Brown - Bernard) Hey everybody, did the news get around About a guy named Butcher Pete? Oh, Pete just flew into this town, And he's choppin' up all the women's meat.
[Chorus] He's hackin' and whackin' and smackin'! He's hackin' and whackin' and smackin'! He's hackin' and whackin' and smackin'! He just hacks, whacks, choppin' that meat!
Butcher Pete's got a long sharp knife; He starts choppin' and don't know when to stop; All you fellows gotta watch your wives 'Cause Pete don't care whose meat he chops.
[Repeat Chorus]
Ever since Peter flew into town He's been havin' a ball; Just cuttin' and choppin' for miles around, Single women, married women, old maids and all
[Repeat Chorus with "Oh, Pete! He loves that meat!" as a spoken interjection]
Wakes up in the morning, half past five, Chops from sunrise to sunset; I don't see how he stays alive; Meat's gonna be the death of ole Pete yet.
[Repeat Chorus]
The police put Pete in jail; Yes, he finally met his fate. But when they came to pay his bail, They found him choppin' up his cell mate
[Repeat Chorus]
That Butcher Pete is the craziest man, Tries to chop down the wind and the rain; Just hacks on anything he can get; Say, turn this record over, you ain't heard nothing yet!
