BLOOD – Haven't mentioned this topic for a while, so I thought I'd bring it up this a.m.: I donated blood to the Red Cross today. It's something I try to do three or four times a year, primarily because, well, because I can. I originally was scheduled to give some in late summer, but the weekend I was set to go in, I was taking prescription anti-inflammatories for a swollen knee, and I called to postpone it. Today, everything was copasetic, so I got up early and headed to Red Cross hq.
I'm a fairly speedy donor: was in and out in under an hour, which also includes time spent answering the same ol' questionnaire at the beginning and sitting in the dining area afterwards with a cup of coffee and some raisin cookies. Nowadays, they allow you fill out your own questionnaire on a laptop, which speeds things up considerably. I'm convinced that they made up half the disease names just for the questionnaire, though, just so the form won't so overwhelmingly be about whether you've had unprotected sex or not . . .
Always come out of a blood donation feeling like a pretty decent person, though, so even the uncomfortable presence of an IV needle in my arm doesn't faze me. I'd recommend the experience for anyone who can do it. When else do you get the opportunity to eat cookies in the morning and know that you're doing it because medical professionals told you to?
