SPEAKIN' TO THE ISSUES – In my neck o' the plains, the big election campaign this year is 'tween our Dem governor Rod Blagojevich and his Repub challenger, Judy Barr Topinka. I don't have a big stake in that particular race: to my eyes, Blogo's stint has been characterized by cronyism and bland incompetence, while Topinka hasn't exactly shone through her years of political servitude. I expect both candidates'll get nastier as the weeks progress, though, which could provide some small entertainment.
And speaking of nasty, let's go down to the state elections where this week Pekin Representative Mike Smith was slammed in a teevee ad by his Republican opponent Daryl Dagit for the egregious act of getting fat. The political ad features a photo of the younger Smith followed by a second image of a substantially heavier middle-aged Smith with a tagline noting how much the Representative's "changed" in the decade since he went to Springfield. Smith, who has had a public battle of the bulge, accused his opponent of fat-bashing, while Dagit disingenuously responded by basically saying, "All the ad does is feature a photo of the guy!" Nice to see heartland politicos keeping to the high road . . .
