CHA-CHA HEELS – Over at Matt Zoller Seitz's place, they're considering the darkest movie moments of anti-Christmas. All the usual suspects are pulled out (Santa slasher flicks, Phoebe Cates' holiday memory from the first Gremlins, et al). But one of my faves gets not a mention: the opening to John Waters' (yeah, him again) Female Trouble, where Dawn (Divine) Davenport throws a hissy fit over not receiving the right pair of shoes for Xmas, knocks down the tree and stomps on all the other presents before storming out of the house. Now that's a believable movie Xmas!
ADDENDUM: I need to see the movie again, but I also have memory of a dark visual ref to Michelangelo's Pietà in the original Black Christmas (Olivia Hussey cradling a dead Keir Dullea) which tickled my sacrilegious fancy. Wonder if the remake'll include that image?
