"WHAT CAN I DO? I'M LONELY, TOO!" – Denny Doherty, the tenor voice in the Mamas and the Papas, has passed on. Perhaps the quintessential folk-pop group of their day, the Mamas & Papas were so known for their harmonies and the memorable presence of Mama Cass Elliot that Doherty's contributions to the group were often overlooked. Yet that's him singing the darkly beautiful lyrics to "California Dreamin'" and so many other prime tracks in the group's too-short catalog. (Personal fave: "Look Through My Window.") Though from all reports, the relationship dynamics in the M&P's were as fucked up as you'd expect 'em to be in a quartet of male and female bohos during the sixties, their sound remains sublime to this day, in part due to Doherty's crystalline voice.
NOTE: Ben has some smart thoughts on Doherty's career as a Papa.
