FAREWELL TO DENNY CRANE: So Crane, Poole & Schmidt became Chang, Poole & Schmidt last week - and Boston Legal concluded its rollicking run. Watched the series finale over the weekend, and I've gotta admit that while I've had issue with creator David E. Kelley's erratic treatment of his characters and legal subjects, I'll miss the show's concluding balcony scenes - the one consistent component in the series. The easygoing camaraderie between Shatner's loony reactionary and Spader's teasingly smarmy liberal provided a low-key respite from the pit-bull antagonism that characterizes so much teevee politics. For all their considerable differences, these two guys clearly love each other - and even a marriage arranged for tax purposes can't mask that fact. It may just be a boob tube fantasy, but it's an appealing one. And Denny's itchy paintball trigger finger still makes me snort . . .
